Our story

Welcome to Legend Aviation, the result of a shared passion of aviation and vintage aircraft.

Founded by Bevan Dewes and Lucy Newell, our company was born out of a desire to share our love of vintage aircraft with others. As the current custodians of these wartime veterans, we’re committed to sharing the joy of flying in them with others, keeping air under their wings and maintaining them for future generations to enjoy.

Our mission is simple:

To honour the past, inspire the present and preserve our aircraft for the future.

Whether you’re a seasoned pilot or up for a new adventure, we invite you to join us an experience you wont forget!

Our PILOTS

Lucy Newell

Lucy began her aviation career in 2015 as a flight instructor in Wanaka. Her love for vintage aircraft was ignited in 2017 during her first flight in a Tiger Moth, a passion that ultimately resulted in her purchasing her own Tiger Moth ‘Queenie’ 5 years later. In 2019, Lucy converted her licence and traveled to Canada to fly floatplanes, starting on a C185 and a short time later progressing to the DHC-2 Beaver. As the pandemic took hold, she moved onto a C208 Caravan, suppling remote communities in northwestern Ontario with essential supplies, and transport. Currently, when she isn’t flying here in Masterton, she works on rotation, flying an AT802 "FuelBoss" delivering fuel to isolated communities in Indonesia.

Bevan Dewes

Bevan has had a passion for aviation from a very early age, growing up north of Masterton he took his first flight off the family’s farm airstrip in a top dressing aircraft. At the age of 16 Bevan began his flight training, ultimately gaining his commercial pilots licence, and converting onto the Tiger Moth very shortly after. Since then, Bevan has followed his passion for warbirds and is now rated on many types, most notably; the Sopwith Pup, Royal Aircraft Factory RE8, Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk, Supermarine Spitfire and of the course the North American Harvard. Bevan proudly displays his Harvard in various air shows, and  can be seen at the next Warbirds over Wanaka. When he isn’t flying, Bevan owns and operates a beekeeping company alongside his brother Ryan producing manuka honey.
